CHAPTER 8
Kane
ANOTHER MONTH PASSED. Kane enjoyed dating Joy, and things were going as well as could be expected. Kane grabbed the coffee mugs from the counter and walked into the living room where Joy sat on the couch watching a movie. He loved having her in his home, relaxed, and just being his woman. She was at his house more often than her own. He’d cleared out space for her in his closet and in his drawers, and everywhere he looked around his home, there were traces of Joy scattered about. It felt good. He liked having little bits of her surrounding him every day. Now if he could only convince his woman to let everyone know they were a couple, he’d be a lot happier.
“This movie is good,” Joy said while reaching for the mug in his hand.
“I told you it was. Next time you’ll trust me.” Sitting down on the couch next to her, he placed his bare feet on the coffee table in front of him. Patting his thighs, he picked up one of her legs and placed it on his lap. “Put your feet up.” When they first began staying at his house, it took Joy a while to become comfortable in his space. Now it was as if she lived here, which would be just fine with him.
The only wrinkle in their relationship was the secrecy. Kane didn’t like that they had to hide. In the office, he had to make sure he didn’t do or say anything that would give them away. Joy was adamant that they not let anyone know what was going on between the two of them. He didn’t really care. Given a chance, he would shout it from the rooftops how much he loved this woman. Even though it had only been a few months since he’d come clean, his feelings for her were real as anything he’d felt before.
“Joy, we need to talk.”
Her eyes didn’t leave the screen. “About what?” She lifted the mug to her lips for another sip of the warm drink.
“About us.” Setting his own mug on the side table, he shifted his body so that he was looking at her when he spoke again. “I don’t want to hide you, us, anymore. I went along with your request in the beginning because I understood your hesitation. The way we met. Everything that went down between us. Even our jobs have stood in the way of us. I’m done with it.”
He watched as she sat frozen, her wide gaze staring at him. Joy attempted to move her feet from his lap, but he stopped her. “No. Stay right where you are. I’m not going to let you avoid the conversation. I’ve had enough with the sneaking around. We’ve been dating for more than three months, not counting the four months before that. You practically live in my home. Baby, I want to show you off.”
Joy finally found her voice. “Kane. Don’t do this. You show me off all the time.
